Counterfeiting can apply to currency, documents, or goods. For example: you can counterfeit birth certificates or passports, or manufacture and sell goods under a brand name. Both are fraud and can be charged either as misdemeanors or felonies depending on the type of fraud and your criminal history.

Misdemeanors face jail time of up to one year and a maximum $1,000 fine. Felonies face 16 months to three years of state prison and fine of up to $10,000.
